After School Activities

Groups

• Girls are placed in groups by grade level

• Pink (K-1), Red (2-3), Yellow (4-5), Green (6-7), Blue (8-12)

• Specific activities are age appropriate

Activities

Daily

• Girls will be introduced to a variety of sports twice a week including volleyball, soccer, basketball, football and Frisbee (sneakers are necessary for sports days). The days will vary based on the sport. Please consult the weekly schedule for specific days.

• Additional activities include: arts & crafts, computer time and outside activities

• These activities take place between 3:45 and 6:00 each day Field Trips

• Field trips generally occur on Wednesdays for girls in pink, red and yellow groups due to early release; green and blue will vary

• Trips may include visiting museums, skating, going on tours, or visiting local parks

• Trips are not optional but part of the objectives of the after school program

• A weekly schedule of events and field trips is provided– if you do not want your child to attend you must notify the office by phone or by sending a note with your child (verbal messages will not be accepted through the girls); families may not opt out of a field trip (consideration will only be made for doctor’s appointments, etc.)

• Most often girls will return by 4:30 pm unless otherwise noted on the schedule

 

Homework

• Homework help offered is offered from 3:15-4:00 Monday – Thursday (Friday if necessary); additional time will be allowed for girls who need it

• Staffed by recreational aides and volunteers

• All girls will participate during this time

• Those without homework will be asked to read quietly or will be given worksheets or tasks to help them with their academics

 

Specialty Classes

• Classes are created as a result of interest and instructor availability

• May include piano lessons, drama, Girl Scouts, or sign language

• Schedules are established with the instructors on a weekly basis (generally between 4:00 and 6:00 pm)

• Most specialty classes are offered at no additional cost, but some may require additional fees. The sign up sheets will indicate an additional fee if applicable.

 

Discipline

• The staff is expected to provide and maintain a safe atmosphere which will encourage positive behavior, high achievement and show respect for all individuals by treating them fairly and impartially

• Recreational aides and other staff members may develop individual rules and disciplinary practices, which supplement the Discipline Policy but do not conflict with it

• The girls are expected to know, understand and abide by the rules set forth by the administrative staff as well as the recreational aides

• Parents are asked to support the Girls Place, Inc., the staff and the rules that are in place to protect the girls

• Factors that are considered when determining the level of discipline for misbehavior include but are not limited to:

• Seriousness of offense
• Planning, impulse or self defense
• Age and/ or disability
• Strength of evidence
• Cooperation /remorse
• Disciplinary history


The consequences (baring any special circumstances) are:

1. Verbal Reprimand
2. Time Out
3. Withdrawal of Privileges
4. Work Detail/Restitution
5. Conversation with program director or executive director
6. Notify parent through write-up slip (no more than three times)
7. Suspension from the Girls Place, Inc. (three days after third write-up slip within six month period)
8. Alternative placement or expulsion from the Girls Place, Inc.
9. Notify proper law enforcement authorities

• Every effort is made to involve the parents in every aspect of a child’s experience while at the Girls Place, Inc.
